White Water Rafting on the Tully & Barron Rivers

Raging Thunder Adventures pioneered rafting in Queensland, Australia in 1984 with our first commercial trip consisting of three nervous passengers on the Tully River.

Even today we still raft the Mighty Tully River, because is regarded as the best rafting river accross Australia and New Zealand. This awesome adventure is located in spectacular surroundings only 2 hours south of Cairns, with departures from Port Douglas, Cairns, Northern Beaches and Mission Beach.

Plus we also raft the Barron River located just outside Cairns, with a half day raft perfectly suited for first time adventurer or those who want to cram more into their Adventure Holiday.

SO HOW WILD IS THE RIDE?

The rivers of the area are graded using an international system which gives a grading from 1 to 6.

Grade 1: Simple easy rapids

Grade 2: Simple technical rapids with a need to maneuver raft.

Grade 3: Moderate rapids with the need to hold on at times and maintain control of rafts.

Grade 4: Moderate technical rapids with the need to hold on at times, and definite continuous need to maneuver rafts. Exciting rafting.

Grade 5: Heavy, difficult rapids. Essential to maintain control. Steep gradient.

Grade 6: Extremely difficult rapids. Necessary to be in control but rarely possible. Dangerous rafting.

The rapids on the Tully River are of grade 3-4

The rapids on the Barron River are of grade 1-2

Please use this as a guide when choosing your level of adrenalin rush, but remember that experience is NOT necessary; in fact most of our clients have never been rafting before.

RAPID NAMES

Traditionally rapids are named by the first people to raft that rapid, so both the Tully River and Barron River have some rather interesting names...

WHAT TO BRING
  • Your ticket or voucher
  • Swimmers
  • Change of dry clothes
  • Sunscreen (but we don't recommend that you apply this to the back of your legs as it can make it more difficult to hold on)
  • Lace up shoes or reef sandals to wear in the raft which WILL get we (or you can hire them for $4 per pair)
  • Money for souvenirs and drinks

Remember that you won't be able to bring anything aboard the raft other than yourself, but items such as bags / towels / clothes etc. can be stored securely on your coach.

YOUR RAFT AND SAFETY

Each raft holds a maximum of seven passengers and one river guide, who will guide you safely down your river adventure. Infact every one of our guides in expertly trained by internationally renowned safety company Rescue 3.

When you arrive at the river you will be fitted with a helmet and life jacket, allowing you to float along the river should you happen to fall out. Its so safe that you don't even have to be able to swim to enjoy rafting. Plus all of our rafts stay together, traversing the rapids in a carefully planned sequence with guides providing cover from the river banks.

TAKE HOME MEMORIES

At several rapids on your adventure, our professional photographers will be taking photographs .. so be sure to smile (or scream) for them.

At the end of the day we return to the Cafe in Tully for a few well earned drinks, and you will have the option to purchase any of these great photos.

These makes a unique gift to send home to family and friends, plus there are several other great gift ideas.
