Module 1 - HYDROLOGY (RIVER DYMANICS)

 

Purpose

Knowledge of hydrology/river dynamics provides the fundamental framework for negotiating whitewater rapids in rafts.

Learner Outcomes

Trainees must be able to;

  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of hydrological principles
  • Apply principles to maneuver a raft
  • Apply principles to determine cause and effect
  • Apply principles in a rescue situation
  • Identify hazards
 

Module 2 – SWIFTWATER BOAT HANDLING

Purpose

It is essential to develop effective techniques in guiding a raft in swift and technical water. 

Learner Outcomes

Trainees must be able to;

  • Position themselves effectively at the back of the raft
  • Display an effective paddle stroke
  • Demonstrate control of the raft – negotiate rapids safely
  • Break in and out of eddies
  • Deliver rafting commands at the appropriate times
  • Apply hydrology principles
  • Upright an upturned raft
  • Maintain good communication with other rafts (visual and verbal)
 

Module 3 - RIVER OPERATION & SAFETY PROCEDURES

 

Purpose

Promote safety and efficiency through effective river running procedures.

Learner Outcomes

Trainees must be able to;

  • Demonstrate understanding of & compliance with river running procedures
  • Deliver safety talk in accordance with Safety Procedures (bus/raft)
  • Effectively communicate with paddle signals
  • Perform a range of operational duties
  • Adhere to Workplace Health and Safety policy
 

Module 4 - INCIDENT MANAGEMENT (REMOTE AREAS)

 

Purpose

Foster awareness of types of common injury and Discuss options regarding treatment, Evacuation and transportation of injured clients.

Learner Outcomes

Trainees must be able to;

  • Recognise signs and symptoms of common medical conditions
  • Perform basic patient analysis
  • Assist River Medics with basic & advanced first aid treatment
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of evacuation tracks and locations
  • Carry-out different roles in emergency incident management
  • Work well in a tight team environment
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Improvise in a remote environment
 

Module 5 - ENVIRONMENT

 

Purpose

Understand, respect and appreciate the natural and working environment.

Learner Outcomes

Trainees must be able to;

  • Interpret the natural environment
  • Respect the conditions associated with commercial river running permits
  • Work well with a diverse range of clientele
  • Demonstrate cultural Knowledge and linguistic ability
  • Display workplace diplomacy and respect for colleagues and company directives
